Garden Design & Maintenance

Usually these go hand in hand. When changing only a part of a garden it means a redesign of the whole. Maintenance is an essential tool to achieve certain aspects within a design – think of trees that are to become a shape or function but require pruning and care for a number of years in order to achieve this. Realistically a garden designer ought to take on the maintenance of the garden he or she created for the first years after planting to complete the project while the plants are growing. Gardens with a lot of character have had the same head gardener for years, look at Great Dixter (Christopher Lloyd) or Villandry (Patrick Chaudoy).
