Maintenance

at the Abbaye a truly established garden

Maintenance is an essential tool to achieve certain aspects within a design – think of trees that are to become a shape or function but require pruning and care for a number of years in order to achieve this. Realistically a garden designer ought to take on the maintenance of the garden he or she created for the first years after planting to complete the project while the plants are growing.

Before     After
2001 to 2003    I spent both winters, 3 months in these 105 Lime Trees pollarding. When I arrived they hadn't been pruned for 8 years, the result is a red area during winter and dappled shade below in the hot summers.
